What is Thermoplastic Line Striping and How Do We Apply It?


Thermoplastic line striping is a synthetic material made up of resins, pigments, glass beads, and filler. The thermoplastic material arrives as a dry powder, which we then heat to 400°F in a specialized kettle and apply directly to the pavement in a molten state. As it cools, it forms a strong bond with the asphalt or concrete below.

Thickness and Temperature


We heat thermoplastic to a high temperature of 400°F before applying it. The thickness of the thermoplastic line is usually around 90 to 125 mils, compared to the 15 to 25 mils of standard paint. This makes for both better durability and traction.


Application Method


We use extrusion, ribbon application, and spray techniques, all of which need specialized heating equipment. Before applying thermoplastic, we need a clean and dry pavement, as oil, loose aggregate, and moisture all ruin the bond.


Reflectivity


Glass beads are mixed in with the thermoplastic material and are also dropped onto the surface during application, which gives the markings a nice retroreflective quality, especially at night and in wet conditions.


Curing


After we apply thermoplastic, it can cool and solidify in just a few minutes. This means you can reopen your lot to traffic a lot faster than with paint jobs.

Thermoplastic forms a strong, wear-resistant layer at 90+ mils that resists tire wear, UV damage, and automotive fluids. Thermoplastic is less prone to damage from gasoline or oil spills that can dissolve standard paint in no time.


Solvent-based paints have slightly better durability than water-based acrylic, but still only last 2 to 3 years.


Drying Time and Downtime


Most water-based paints need 30 to 60 minutes to dry before light traffic and several hours before heavy use. Thermoplastic markings cure in as little as five minutes, which cuts the time you need to close your lot.


Cost


Thermoplastic paint costs roughly $0.40 to $0.75 per linear foot, making it a pretty sizeable upfront cost compared to water-based paint, which costs about $0.15 to $0.25 per linear foot.


But while thermoplastic is more expensive to start with, you don't have to keep repainting it every two years or so. Many people choose thermoplastic because of its reduced long-term maintenance costs, especially when you factor in the cost of mobilization, labor, and downtime for each repaint cycle.


Limitations


Thermoplastic markings are a lot harder to remove or alter than paint. That can be a hassle if your lot layout changes a lot and you need to make some changes to your striping.


Also, thermoplastic is more susceptible to damage from snowplow blades in certain situations. Paint, on the other hand, is cheap enough to reapply every season.
